The biggest Men’s RWC to date, and the tournament’s 11th edition, will see the 24-team expanded format feature six pools of four teams, followed by a Round of 16 for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.
The final will be held at Stadium Australia, Sydney, and in total, there will be 52 games at Rugby World Cup 2027, which represents an increase from the 48 at Rugby World Cup 2023.
The games will be played at seven iconic Australian cities: Adelaide | Tarntanya, Brisbane | Meeanjin, Melbourne | Narrm, Newcastle | Awabakal-Worimi, Perth | Boorloo, Sydney | Gadigal and Townsville | Gurambilbarra.
World Rugby Chair, Brett Robinson, said: “I’m thrilled to see the tournament draw date revealed. The draw brings the potential match-ups to life, rivalries are set, and fans across the globe can envision the unforgettable rugby that awaits. Expanding the Men’s Rugby World Cup to 24 teams is a landmark moment for our sport. It means more nations, more matches, and more opportunities for fans around the world to connect with rugby.
The introduction of a round of 16 will deliver even more knockout rugby, ensuring every match counts and every team has the chance to make history. Importantly, we’ve been able to achieve this within a streamlined tournament window that protects player welfare while enhancing the spectacle. This is a huge step forward for rugby and a reflection of the game’s global growth.”
Rugby World Cup 2027 Draw Date – How Does It Work?
The Rugby World Cup 2027 draw will be held on the evening (AEST) of 3 December 2025, and broadcast live on international broadcasters and RugbyPass TV, with the 24 qualified teams discovering their pool stage opponents.
- The 12 teams that finished in the top three of their pools at Rugby World Cup 2023 have automatically qualified for Rugby World Cup 2027: France, New Zealand, Italy, Ireland, South Africa, Scotland, Wales, Fiji, Australia, England, Argentina and Japan.
- The 12 remaining places have qualified through various tournaments: Georgia, Spain, Romania, Portugal, Tonga, Canada, United States, Uruguay, Chile, Zimbabwe and Hong Kong China.
- One final qualifier from the tournament in Dubai in November: Namibia, Belgium, Samoa and whoever wins a playoff between Brazil and Paraguay, which takes place in October.
World Rugby said, “This marks the first time all competing teams will be known at the time of the RWC Draw, with the 24th and final qualifier to be determined at November’s Final Qualification Tournament in Dubai (8-18 November).” The teams confirmed for the final tournament are Belgium, Namibia, Samoa and either Brazil or Paraguay.
- Once the 24 teams are confirmed, they are seeded from 1 to 24 based on their World Rugby rankings at the time of the draw on 3 December.
- The top six teams will be grouped in Band 1, while the next six form Band 2, and so on.*
- Each pool will have one team from each of the four bands.
*One exception to all this: Australia already know they are in Pool A as they are the host nation and will therefore contest the opening game on 1 October 2027.
World Rugby explained: The Wallabies are currently in Band 2, which means a team from Band 1 will be drawn and placed in Pool A, and they would automatically be joined by Australia. However, should Australia climb into the top six by December, they would automatically be the top-ranked team in Pool A, and a team from Band 2 would be drawn alongside them.

Chris Stanley, Managing Director of Men’s Rugby World Cup Australia 2027, added: “The Draw on 3 December will be the next major milestone — the moment when fans and players alike discover who they’ll be facing in the pool phase.
From there, anticipation will only grow as we move towards unveiling the match schedule and opening ticket sales in February 2026. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Australians to be part of a truly international celebration and for the global rugby community to share in an incredible Men’s Rugby World Cup in Australia.”
- The Brave Blossoms are currently ranked #13 but still have Tests against Australia, South Africa, Ireland, Wales and Georgia before the draw takes place (Currently Band 3 for the draw).
- Hong Kong China will be heading to their first-ever Men’s RWC and have no more announced Tests in 2025 in which to improve their ranking, which is currently #23 (Currently Band 4 for the draw).
Rugby World Cup 2027 Format
The tournament in Australia will feature six pools of four teams, with the World Rugby Men’s Rankings at the end of the November internationals used to create four bands of six teams, with each band drawn randomly into Pool A, B, C, D, E or F.
The top two teams from each pool, plus the four best third-placed teams, will qualify for the knockout phase. World Rugby said this “allows for more nations to reach that stage, ensuring every match counts and bringing more entertainment to the competition.”
The round of 16 will see the winners of Pool A, B, C and D play the four best thirds, winners of Pool E and F will face the runners-up from Pool D and B, with the runners-up in Pool A and C to meet the second-placed teams from Pool E and F.
Rugby Australia posted that the RWC 2027 tournament includes:
- 24 teams, 52 matches and seven host cities across Australia
- Six pools of four and the first-ever round of 16 at the Men’s Rugby World Cup
- A format that does not equate to more games for the players
- Despite adding four extra teams, the pool stage is shorter – RWC 2023 lasted 50 days in total, and Rugby World Cup 2027 will take place over 43 days.

- May 2026 – A three-week general application phase will open to all supporters worldwide, offering the chance to request tickets for any match with a ballot system implemented for oversubscribed price categories.

RWC 2027 Impact
The tournament organsiers said that the Men’s Rugby World Cup 2027 will “usher in a new era for the sport on and off the field” by fostering a more diverse and connected fanbase, breaking barriers while leaving a positive legacy for Australians and the sport across the region.
- 250,000 international visitors are expected over the six-week period
- RWC 2027 is projected to generate AUD$1.3 billion in direct visitor expenditure across the country and seven host cities
- The goal is to get 200,000 new rugby participants by 2029
It should be noted that Men’s RWC 2023 generated £472 million, which was a record surplus, reach and impact – truth be told, the profits from the Men’s pinnacle event seem to fund many of the other tournaments on World Rugby’s roster and the Men’s RWC tournament appears to be the driver of World Rugby’s surplus and investment capability.
