100,000+ Tickets Sold for 50th Anniversary Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens
Hong Kong China Rugby (HKCR) has announced that 100,000+ tickets for the 50th Anniversary Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens tournament have been sold for the tournament to be held at Kai Tak Stadium from 17-19 April 2026.
Over five decades, the Hong Kong Sevens has developed a reputation as a showcase for rugby legends like Jonah Lomu and Waisele Serevi, and hosted some of the biggest music acts from The Beach Boys, Madness and The Wailers to last year’s South Stand set from rockers Kaiser Chiefs.
With still 10 weeks to go before the tournament, selling 100,000 tickets shows its staying power and popularity as a bucket list event for rugby and sports fans around the globe.
The launch of the HK Sevens at the Kai Tak last year attracted 110,907 fans over three days (generating an estimated 97 million USD for the local economy). Organisers are confident of exceeding that figure with the 50th Anniversary Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.
The Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens is one of three World Championship events on the HSBC SVNS Series this season and will feature 24 teams (12 men and 12 women). The Melrose Claymores competition will also return, bringing the total of international teams participating inside Kai Tak to 30, including the hometown favourites, the men’s and women’s Hong Kong China Rugby sevens squads.
Bryan Rennie, Executive Director of Commercial and Business Operations of Hong Kong China Rugby said, “We are delighted to celebrate this ticketing milestone on our journey to the 50th Anniversary Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. 100,000 tickets are the equivalent of just over 33,000 three-day passes, which means we are well on our way to another bumper crowd for the event.
As always, revenues from the Sevens are reinvested in the sport and our community, as we continue to grow the game of rugby in Hong Kong. We are grateful for the support of our fans across Hong Kong, the region and around the world and look forward to welcoming them all to a very special 50th Anniversary in April”.
