Nagato Blue Angels Win Taiyo Seimei WSS 2025 Tournament Two In Kitakyushu
The second leg of the 2025 Taiyo Seimei WSS (Women’s Sevens Series) in Kitakyushu created some surprises as the Nagato Blue Angels were victorious, while neither team which reached the final in the first leg made it to the final at Mikuni World Stadium on July 21st.
The Nagato Blue Angels beat Nanairo Prism Fukuoka in the final on Monday, 31-12, with the winners of the first leg Mie Pearls claiming third by beating Self-Defence Forces Physical Education School PTS 22-0.
Earlier in the day, the star-studded Pearls team had lost their semifinal heavily to the eventual champions of WSS leg two, 7-45. Runners-up from the first leg, Tokyo Sankyu Phoenix, could only finish 7th overall.
The Mie Pearls said online after the tournament, “The result was frustrating, but we gave our all to the end. In preparation for the Hanazono Tournament and the Grand Final Sapporo Tournament, we will continue to work together and aim to win the championship.”
The tournament MVP was Mei Otani (Nagato Blue Angels).
The overall standings after two legs mean the Mie Pearls still are on top of the log, followed by the two finalists in Kitakyushu, with the Phoenix dropping to 4th.
Only the top 8 teams of the log after round 3 will play in the Grand Final Tournament in Sapporo on August 17, 2025, at the Daiwa House Premist Dome.
The bottom four teams will play to stay in the top flight, and currently, the teams outside of the top 8 are: Artemi-Stars, Venus (Otemae University Women’s Rugby Club), Arukas Queen Kumagaya and the Challenge Team.
The Challenge Team were comprised of “High School students selected from across the country”, said the JRFU, and most are 17-18 years old.
