Tokyo Set To Host 2027 WWR Wheelchair Rugby Asia-Oceania Championship

Tokyo, Japan, will host the 2027 WWR Wheelchair Rugby Asia-Oceania Championship at the National Yoyogi Stadium with the tentative dates of June 30 until July 4.

The Japan Wheelchair Rugby Federation (JWRF) confirmed the news today and added via a press release that the tournament will be an important competition to determine the one spot for the Asia-Oceania region to qualify for the “Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games”.

The JWRF just placed third at the WWR World Championships 2026, which the USA won, and Australia was runner-up.

The 2027 WWR Asia-Oceania Championship tournament in Japan will see between 4-6 teams compete, and Tomohisa Yamano, Chairman of the Japan Wheelchair Rugby Federation, said, “This tournament is an extremely important test, as it will determine the single qualifying spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Paralympics.

Our victory at the 2023 WWR Wheelchair Rugby Championship was a sure driving force behind our long-awaited gold medal at the Paris Paralympics. We are determined to win the 2027 tournament, defeating strong opponents including our arch-rival Australia, and use that as a springboard to achieve a second consecutive Paralympic victory in Los Angeles.”

WWR Chairman Richard Allcroft OBE added, “It is exciting to see the Championship taking place in Japan, and the opportunity to qualify to the next Paralympic Games in Los Angeles is one that I know the team will be strongly competing for. JWRF are a leader in the Asian region, and I once again want to thank them for hosting this event and continuing the legacy into their planning.”

Japan defeated the USA 48-41 in the final to win gold at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
