Asian Pathway for Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games Rugby 7s Confirmed
World Rugby confirmed the qualification pathway for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games Rugby 7s, as 12 men’s and 12 women’s teams will once again compete in the fourth Olympic Games Rugby 7s appearance, having debuted at Rio 2016 before featuring at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024.
As was the case with the French teams for Paris 2024, the USA will receive an automatic quota place in both the men’s and women’s competitions at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games Rugby 7s. Asian teams will seek qualification through the regional qualification tournament, but the Japan women could qualify from the HSBC SVNS 2027 Series.
Both the Japanese Women and Men, as well as the Chinese Women, qualified from Asia for Paris 2024. The Japanese teams won the regional qualification tournament, while the Chinese won the Repechage.
HSBC SVNS 2027 – Los Angeles 2028 Olympics Games Rugby 7s Pathway
The HSBC SVNS 2027 season is set to kick off in Dubai in November 2026 and conclude in Bordeaux at the end of May 2027
The four highest-ranked eligible men’s teams and four highest-ranked eligible women’s teams, excluding host nation USA, in the final HSBC SVNS World Championship 2027 standings will each secure a place for LA 28 (if approved by their respective Olympic Committees).
Regional Qualification LA 2028 Olympics Games Rugby 7s Pathway
After the HSBC SVNS 2027, six regional qualification tournaments will take place across the second half of 2027. One place in each of the men’s and women’s competitions will be available from each of World Rugby’s six regional associations:
- Africa
- Asia
- Europe
- North America*
- Oceania
- South America
*Should an eligible men’s or women’s North American team secure an LA28 place through the HSBC SVNS World Championship 2027, the North American regional qualifier will instead qualify a team for the Olympic Repechage.
The corresponding LA28 quota place will then be awarded to the next highest-ranked eligible NOC at the final Olympic Repechage.
The Rugby 7s at LA 2028 are due to be played at Carson Stadium, the second-largest soccer-specific stadium in the U.S. and home to the Los Angeles Galaxy. The Women’s Tournament is due to be held from July 12–15, 2028, and the Men’s from July 16–18, 2028.

Olympic Repechage Rugby 7s – LA 2028
Once again, the final quota place in each competition will be decided at the Olympic Repechage tournament in June 2028.
In previous Olympic cycles, this has been held in Monaco, where Hong Kong China Men’s 7s fell just short of qualifying for Paris 2024. The Chinese women did come out on top and were the final women’s team to qualify after winning in the Repechage in the previous cycle.
World Rugby confirmed that 8 men’s and 8 women’s teams, qualifying through the regional championships or Games, will contest the repechage. Only the winners will secure the 12th and final qualification place in their respective competitions at LA28.
Paris 2024 Rugby 7s Champions
The French men won the gold medal at home, defeating two-time Olympic champions Fiji in the gold medal match at the Stade de France, with South Africa claiming bronze.
In the women’s competition, New Zealand successfully defended their Olympic title, defeating Canada in the gold medal match, while the USA secured their first Olympic rugby sevens medal with bronze.
