Four Teams Qualify for HSBC SVNS World Championship Series From SVNS Division 2
Four teams; Argentina & South Africa women and Germany and USA men, have qualified for the HSBC SVNS World Championship Series after SVNS Division 2 leg 2 in Montevideo, with one round still to play, and the China Women are still in with a chance.
Argentina’s women’s sevens squad won back-to-back HSBC SVNS 2 titles in Montevideo, while Spain and South Africa women finished second and third. The results meant South Africa also qualified
China are fourth in the standings and had very narrow losses to both Spain and Argentina this weekend, a heavy defeat to SA and wins over Brazil and Kenya.
Argentina (40 log points) and South Africa (34 log points) are through the Championship rounds, with Spain (34 points) looking set to finish third, with China (28 points) and Brazil (22 points) in a race to finish fourth and claim the final qualification berth.
The player of the tournament for the women was Argentina’s Maria Brigido Chamorro.
SA coach Cecil Afrika said, “We need to play matches at this level to get used to the intensity and quality as we are also in the process of building depth in our squad. We gave Shanidinè Bezuidenhout the opportunity to debut in this tournament and she did well, while someone like Lerato Makua, who has not played that many tournaments before, really stood out with her effort. She has now matured into a very good international sevens player, and that came from being exposed to this level of rugby.”
In the men’s competition, Germany and the USA qualified for the HSBC SVNS World Championship Series and the USA won the title in Montevideo and a perfect five wins from five matches at Estadio Charrua.
Kenya and Uruguay are in the third and fourth qualifying positions, with Belgium and Canada chasing them.
