Following the first leg held in China, the Japanese women and Hong Kong men are in pole position to become Asian champions. For HKCR, if they do finish on top of the standings after the second leg, they will represent Asia at the World Rugby HSBC SVNS Division 3 (with details of venue and dates still TBC).
For the women, both the Japanese Sakura (SVNS 1) and Chinese women (SVNS 2), are already guaranteed to play the global series, but it remains a two-way fight between HKCR women and Thailand, and the highest finisher will proceed to HSBC SVNS Division 3.
Asia Rugby has not yet publicly explained if there is promotion and relegation with the Trophy 7s, and if there is, how many teams might be impacted. Currently sitting at the bottom of the log for the Men is the Philippines, and for the women, it is Indonesia.
Pavithra Fernando, the newly elected President of Sri Lanka Rugby, said, “I am proud to welcome all teams, officials, and the Asia Rugby family to Colombo for this prestigious finale. We are committed to hosting more international events of this calibre and to bringing back the glory days of Sri Lanka Rugby — united, competitive, and inspiring a new generation of players and fans.”

India Women 7s Squad
India surprised some with their 6th overall finish in Leg 2, but they have been knocking on the door for some time after being repeat runners-up in the Trophy 7s and the investment they have made domestically (and hiring international coaches). The impressive team beat both the Philippines (24-5) and the UAE (19-12) in China.
Rahul Bose, President of the Indian Rugby Football Union, said, “The performance in Hangzhou was both encouraging and inspiring. To debut in Asia’s premier competition and finish sixth reflects the dedication and progress of our women’s rugby programme. As the team prepares for Colombo, we look forward to building on this momentum and continuing our journey towards establishing India among Asia’s elite.”
New Head Coach of the Indian Women’s Sevens Team, Paul Delport, explained, “We took valuable lessons from Leg 1 – both in execution and in consistency. The focus now is on converting those learnings into results in Colombo. The players have shown great commitment, and we’re eager to see them perform with confidence and clarity once again.”
