The Singapore leg saw 22 new debutants on the HSBC SVNS Series – only the Canada and NZ Women, and the Argentina and France men didn’t have a newly capped player.
We will update this article as more information is released this week.
The HSBC SVNS Log standings can be seen here.
Women’s Pools

- Pool A: New Zealand, USA, Fiji, Japan
- Pool B: Australia, Canada, France, GB
Singapore champions and log-leaders New Zealand face USA, Fiji and Japan in Pool A, and beaten Singapore finalists Australia, who are second on the log, will face Canada, France and Great Britain in Pool B.
The JRFU have announced their squad for the Perth SVNS leg, which looks to be similar to the team that played in Singapore.
Haruna Konishi, who made her SVNS Series debut in Singapore and has been selected again, said, “ I felt and learned so much from making my debut at the World Series. I was up against the overwhelming physical strength and speed of the world’s teams, and there were times when I couldn’t play the way I wanted to, but with the support of my teammates, I was able to give it my all.
More than anything, I enjoyed rugby. I was able to actually stand in a world that I had only seen on the other side of the screen, and I felt firsthand the difficulty of competing against the world, as well as the strength and pride of the Sakura Sevens. I will definitely carry this experience forward and will continue to give it my all on this stage, so that I can be a part of the team that can contribute to victory.”
Madison Ashby, captain of the Australian women’s team, said: “We love playing in Perth and the girls did a great job last year winning the title. Now we’re looking to go back-to-back. You can’t beat a home crowd, and we’re fortunate to be one of only a couple of nations to play on home soil each year.”
Men’s Pools

- Pool A: Fiji, South Africa, Spain and Argentina
- Pool B: France, New Zealand, Australia, GB
Newly-crowned men’s champions Fiji will take on South Africa, Spain and Argentina in Pool A, and losing finalists France take on New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain in Pool B.
After finishing 4th in Singapore, Springbok Sevens head coach Philip Snyman said of the Australian leg, “We are now heading to Perth, where we will work on those deficiencies in our execution. We have an internal scorecard on our team standards, and we will revisit that to remind ourselves what we stand for and what our standards are as the Springbok Sevens team.”
Blitzbok Ryan Oosthuizen, who will play his 60th tournament in Perth, added, “When we flow, we are very tough to beat, we know that, but playing against ourselves like we did last weekend, created the opposite for us…..We are hard on ourselves, we work hard to get to a certain standard and when we do not reach those during a tournament, we don’t take kindly to that.”
Henry Hutchison, captain of the Australian men’s team, added: “It’s nice to be back in Perth on home soil. We’re ready to put in a good performance in front of our local fans and family who are travelling from all parts of the country. We were pleased with how we played on the second day in Singapore and want to carry that momentum into this weekend.”
