Update: March 13th 2020
The organisers said via FB on March 13th 2020: “In line with government advice and our desire to keep our community safe, we have decided to postpone the KL Highland Games. More information will follow.”
On the KL Games Facebook page, they have said: “All the traditional activities and events for the whole family to watch, hear and do – plus live music and dancing in the beer tent from 5pm onwards.”
The Highland Games are a Scottish tradition which started in the 11th century. Traditionally, the Games were put on as an “ancient test of strength”, wherein Scottish clans in the Highlands took part in competitions to determine who was the strongest and fastest Clansman.
In 2014, the Selangor St Andrews Society brought the Highland Games to Malaysia and is it gears up for 2020, the games feature a wider variety of traditional Scottish games such as the hammer throw and the caber toss.
Rugby at Kuala Lumpur Highland Games 2020
Importantly for rugby fans there is a veterans and junior rugby tournament planned.
“See strongmen compete in traditional Scottish events – including the caber toss, enjoy stirring sounds of massed bagpipes & drums, watch some thrilling rugby, cheer for a team in the Tug of War, and relax under fans in the beer tent or groove to the band!”
Last year there was Under 6 and 7 junior rugby as well as Vets rugby at the Games with a number of Malaysian based rugby clubs involved.
